A Louise Story
Next month, the grade one foreign teachers are in charge of making a bulletin board. Of course, a Halloween theme seemed like the best choice: we're going to have the kids color pictures and put together a "Booo-tiful" Halloween scene. One of my roommates, Louise, is from Australia. Did you know that Halloween isn't celebrated in Australia? She's been excited about the celebrations coming up at school, and one afternoon she came in eager to help with our bulletin board. Unfortunately, I was pressed for time trying to finish making a handout on my computer before class. Louise's first project was a hand-tracing in the shape of a bat. Lovely, but she asked if it was too big for the board. I took a quick glance in her direction, and agreed. Undetered, she suggested a new project. Not really listening, I muttered "Great idea" and kept typing.
Five minutes later, Louise proudly displayed her creation to the office. "See... Gingerbread men all in a line!!!" She had made a paper chain of beige little men, and she was so proud. Julia burst her bubble pretty quickly, "Louise, Gingerbread men are for Christmas, not Halloween!"
Louise's face fell, enthusiasm dashed. Immediately, she looked to me, "Why didn't you tell me?" Yes, it was all my fault. Anyway, Louise is not one to be discouraged, and she's the kind of person to always see the good in a situation. She thought for a moment, then decided "It's okay, I'll just put little fangs dripping with blood on them."
